A restored 19th-century house located right at the mouth of the river Douro, Duas Portas is hidden on the waterfront of Foz do Douro, known for its cool local neighbourhood & proximity to the Atlantic ocean. Owned by Luísa Moura, granddaughter of one of Portugal’s most treasured architects, Eduardo Souta de Moura, the townhouse was completely restored by Luísa's mother – also an architect as well as a furniture designer - using vernacular architectural principles similar to those used in the houses of Porto at the time when the house was originally built, around the late 1800s. Details including tiles, mosaic & angular stone masonry are lifted by a character-filled interior decoration focused on vintage objects, contemporary art & design pieces.
While set away from the ‘buzz’ of the historical centre, a stay at Duas Portas is an experience in itself; with the beach just moments away it’s a more laidback community that run the scene. If indeed, the city & its sights do call, the classic tram leaves from just outside the door & rattles its way in just fifteen minutes along the banks of the picturesque riverbank.

Our favourite room: The eight rooms spread over three floors are all different, but we love those with garden views.
