Rosa Et Al Townhouse
PORTO
Before entering the original door of Rosa et al Townhouse in the very-much-arrived art district of Porto, take a moment to enjoy the beautiful façade; a beautiful preservation of typical Portuguese tiles coloured a striking shade of yellow. Co-owner Emanuel (who opened the hotel with his sister Patricia) is an architect by trade & his delicate renovation of Rosa Et Al Townhouse picked up a ‘Respect for Architecture’ award in 2012.
It’s clear to see why, for once inside, amongst the imaginative allure of art & traditional architecture, seven suites are clad with aged wooden beams & floorboards & decorated with mid-century modern furniture. Hand-crocheted throws & an artful assembly of antiques give a quirky character, conjuring a feeling fit for only the most seasoned of design-o-philes.
Nowadays, Emanuel is the celebrated in-house chef, serving up a weekend brunch that is of local legend. The hotel's food is a mixture of organic, fair trade & locally sourced produce, some grown in the on-site garden. Along with his sister, Patricia, the pair ensure the warmest of welcomes & you'll soon feel like one of the family, too.

Location: Set in the creative heart of the art district, Rosa Et Al Townhouse is half a mile from Porto’s historic centre & a fifteen-minute walk from the riverfront.
Price: Suites start at 170€ per night.
Highlights: If you have a penchant for art & midcentury furniture, you’ll be delighted by the curiosities at Rosa et Al Townhouse.
Our favourite room: Top of the pile is the Club Suite, under the eaves of a double-height ceiling in the attic. If staying in the main house, keep in mind that the rooms at the back of the house are quieter.
Services: Breakfast served daily for an additional cost where teetering stacks of pancakes & just-baked loaves are among the highlights.

The Neighbourhood: Pop into some of the local art galleries before a light lunch at natural wine bar Genuíno before hopping on the tram down to Foz do Douro. Visit the Serralves Art Gallery for some of the best contemporary art in the country & head back for (more…!) wine & eats at Capela Incomum, a bar housed in a tiny 18th century chapel.
Things to know: You’ll need to walk to get to the main sights, & pets are welcome for a flat fee of 35€.
