An 18th-century building, rebuilt after the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1755, today acts as the home of Baixa House, a unique & charming stay in the city’s buzzy Baixa district. After a more recent process of careful renovation & rehabilitation by the current owners, today Baixa House makes up a collection of quirky apartments for two to seven people, named after the botanical gardens of Lisbon.
Set off a central staircase - take note of the original wooden floorboards revived from the city's old ships - fourteen character-filled apartments are each different & filled with unique objects, curiosities & vintage furniture. This delicate & almost imperceptible decor incorporates various unlikely elements of traditional Portuguese craftsmanship ensuring that these self-catering bolt holes feel like stepping into a friend’s eclectic home.

Highlights: Beautiful antique finds & botanical prints which adorn the walls & surfaces of Baixa House will give you inspiration for traversing the flea markets of Lisbon for your own.
Our favourite room: The Ultramar apartment encapsulates the soul of Baixa House, a three-bedroom bolthole located in the attic where the original structure of the old noble building is most obvious.
Services: All the apartments have their own kitchens equipped with an oven, dishwasher & espresso coffee machine. Breakfast is left each day in your apartment, & fresh bread is delivered in the morning, fresh from the bakery.
Designed by The owners renovated the property themselves & filled it with treasures from their travels around Portugal.

The Neighbourhood: Baixa House is located at the lowest point of the city (‘baixa’ translates as ‘below’ in Portuguese) so make sure to pack comfy footwear. There is exploring to be done on each of the seven hills around, jump on the tram & soak in the city.
Things to know: There is no air conditioning in the apartments but fans are provided. There are wall heaters for the cooler months but it can get a bit chilly so pack accordingly.
