The Art Gate

Once a grand 1950’s family residence in central Lisbon’s Chiado district, The Art Gate reveals itself as an innovative home-to-hotel concept where the art of hospitality & gastronomy blend with actual art & contemporary allure. Through a cultural agenda designed to provide an integrated experience, the hotel, which occupies what was formerly the family’s intimate private rooms, is now also home to an art gallery that overlooks the historic Teatro da Trindade.
With a regular program of exhibitions & rotating works, just off of the gallery are five large suites & a modern art-filled private dining room. Lisbon’s Atelier Catarina led the interior design overseen by 31-year-old owner Diogo Figueiredo with the idea of providing an elevated platform for small & talented Portuguese creatives, be it in the area of textiles, ceramics or fine art. What was once the family’s kitchen is now the chef’s table, run by Hugo Candeias who creates tasting menus inspired by the artwork, adjusting dishes to the seasons just as the revolving art that adorns the walls of the gallery.

Price: Suites start at 200€ per night.
Highlights: With just six rooms, lots of space at The Art Gate is just a small part of what makes it so special. Suites embrace an open floorplan & include large bathrooms & living spaces as well as high ceilinged bedrooms.
Our favourite room: Suite number one is the largest room of a great spread.
Services: Breakfast is ordered the night before & served in your room each day (make sure to order the honey with your granola, served off the comb). Dinner can be taken in the small art-filled dining room, or at the chef’s table in what used to be the apartments’ kitchen for a seventeen-course tasting menu.

The Neighbourhood: Wander up to Principe Real for some shopping, or down into the Bairo Alto to capture some of the cities best tile facades. Some of Lisbon’s best restaurants are on your doorstep, including Oficio, also run by Art Gate chef.
Things to know: The Art Gate caters to adults only. It is currently closed for refurbishments but will likely open again sometime in 2022.
