Santa Clara 1728

LISBON / HOTEL / TRIED & TESTED

Part of the Silent Living collective, thoughtful & contemporary residences spread across Portugal, Santa Clara 1728 is truly a peaceful home-turned-hotel where guests are welcomed as long-time friends in the leafy Graça district of Lisbon. Deliberately pared back to encourage quietness, presence & a fresh perspective, the renovation of an old noble house - which features eggshell stucco walls, wooden accents & lighting by FLOS - is carried out under the architectural guidance of Aires Mateus. Prioritising the respect of the original heritage of the building, the result is a simple soul that flows through six suites surrounded by towering monuments, marble-topped churches & stunning views of the Tejo river through floor to ceiling windows.

After a bath in your freestanding travertine bathtub, breakfast is taken in the dining room accompanied by vast classical artworks to contrast with the minimal interiors. Prepared by the chef from in-house restaurant Ceia, think five courses of creative deliciousness to set you up for a day of exploring the city. On Tuesdays & Saturdays, a weekly flea market is on your doorstep, the Feira de Ladra, a must haul before snacks & wine at Vino Vero, the locals’ favourite natural wine bar.
