Quinta de São Bernardo
DOURO / HOTEL / WATCHLIST
On the bank of the Douro river at the heart of Portugal’s most famous wine region, lies Quinta de São Bernardo, a charming rural hotel rich in family tradition. Built originally in 1912, the farm & surrounding vineyards have remained in the Monteiro family for over four generations & have been recently renovated by the architect & grandson of the previous owner, Diogo Monteiro & his wife Marcela.
Seven suites in the main house have sweeping views of the river & vineyards while two more recent villas with private pools have interiors that feel cosy & fresh, decorated with refined rusticity. After checking in, head for lunch at the farm-to-table restaurant where much of the dishes, which change daily, are made up of ingredients that have been grown organically on-site or sourced from local producers. Take to the infinity pool overlooking the valley with a book or watch the sailboats breeze past, before retreating to the terrace to sample some of the São Bernardo grapes for sunset. The winter is just as heartwarming when the roaring fire is burning & a comfortable sofa in the sitting room calls.
