Casas Caiadas Open House
ALENTEJO / GUESTHOUSE / TRIED & TESTED
Set on a cobbled street in the ancient town of Arrailoas in the Alentejo, Casas Caiadas Open House is a contemporary four-bedroom guesthouse designed by the architect Luís Pereira Miguel. Once a historic building that hosted a shelter in the early 19th century, today the house is still surrounded by tapestry workshops, grocery stores & crumbling noble abodes.
Tread past infamous rug weavers before stepping off the street & into the discreet & minimal living room of the house which, along with the rest of the property, pays ample respect to the authenticity of the regions’ heritage. The contrast between old & new is seamlessly stylish. Local flea market finds, ceramics by contemporary Portuguese potters, & canvas artworks by Graça Paz are tastefully distributed inside whitewashed walls & where once sat what is apparently ‘the most famous oven in the country’, today lays a stylish kitchen complete with old butcher’s block. Pad through quiet corridors to the rooftop complete with dippy pool & quaint views of the village before setting out to explore the vineyards that surround the town.

The Neighbourhood: Arraiolos is a typical Alentejo town of sail-white houses. A ‘main street’ is cobbled & dotted with tapestry workshops where women craft in the same way they have done for decades. The town has a couple of character-filled local restaurants to try while you’re in town too before heading off to wineries around the countryside.
