Casas Caiadas Cottages

Surrounded by the greenery of century-old olive trees, three traditional whitewashed cottages located in the tranquil setting of the village of Sabugueiro, have been respectfully renovated by Pereira Miguel Arquitectos to encompass a minimal yet rustic & elegantly executed design. Just over an hour’s drive from Lisbon & home to one of the most photographable pools in Portugal, Casa Caiadas offers two ‘dwellings’, one for two guests, the other for six, available to rent either separately or together.
Decorated tastefully with traditional objects in the context of minimal space, the open plan living & dining room is dotted with furniture by some of Portugal’s coolest craftspeople. Here, a sumptuous breakfast spread is taken each morning prepared by the housekeeper after which you can expect to pad out to the pool deck surrounded by the sound of cicada with an architecture journal from the library, or set out to explore the nearby town of Arraiolos, famous for its tapestry craft.

Price: Whole cottage rental starts at 150€ per night.
Highlights: The pool is a serious draw for design lovers & acts as sweet refreshment in the hot summer months.
Our favourite room: You’ll have the whole cottage to yourself & each room feels soft & calming after a day exploring.
Services: The cottages are self-catered but breakfast is served each morning in the communal cottage.

The Neighbourhood: This is a sleepy part of the Alentejo where neighbouring villages live a simple life, relying on agriculture & farming. The closest town of note is Arraiolos, known for its traditional rugs & with a couple of pretty cafes & restaurants to nestle into.
Things to know: A stay at Casas Caiadas is put simply, off-grid. Phone reception can be patchy, but there is wifi at the property.
