An isolated, four-bedroom architectural home in the solitude of the Alentejo countryside, Casa No Tempo sits on a farm with over one hundred years of history. Once an old family dwelling, the house is part of the Silent Living residences spread across Portugal, reimagined by renowned Portuguese architecture firm Aires Mateus.
For those wishing to get away from it all, this is a place that has been deliberately pared back to encourage quietness, presence & fresh perspective. Inside, wide archways & windows - the contours of which were taken from the original farm building - survey the surrounding countryside, beckoning in the brilliant light which lingers somewhere between high ceilings & heated clay tile floors. Minimal interiors encourage reflection & seemingly modern architecture is contrasted by antique furniture & soft linen textiles.
Bedrooms are quiet & understated with high thread count sheets & cosy mood lighting while the open plan living room & kitchen make up the central vestibule, perfect for social evenings with friends or family.
Room Service
Location: Montomor-o-Novo, Alentejo.
Price: From 350€ per night for 1 or 2 people and additional guests for 50€ per person. Minimum stays apply.
Sleeps: Eight people in four double bedrooms.
Highlights: The magnificent natural beauty of the place, walking the herdade, stumbling across herds of sheep, beehives & the recently established permaculture farm reminds us of a bigger picture.
Our favourite room: The whole house is just for you, but the bedroom off of the main living room is a gem for its views of the countryside from the bed.
Services: The house is self-catered but with access to eggs from the chickens & vegetables from the garden nearby. Breakfast is brought & prepared daily by the housekeeper & additional catering can be provided on request.

The Neighbourhood: The house is quite literally ‘in the middle of nowhere & that, is indeed its charm. Spend the daytime traversing through the vast countryside, horse riding with the groundskeeper or exploring local villages nearby.
Things to know: Rural isolation calls for preparation & the right equipment to ensure comfort & serenity. Rent a 4x4 to traverse the land & make sure you bring as much as you need for your stay so you don’t have to leave to hunt for supplies.

Casa No Tempo is located just outside of the village of Sabugueiro, which translates as Elderberry, around an hours’ drive from Lisbon. Fly to Lisbon & rent a land rover to fit in with the locals, plus you’ll need some freedom during your stay.
