The Ivens

LISBON / HOTEL / WATCHLIST

Located in the buzzy Chiado neighbourhood, this beautiful new hotel in Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon has more rooms than perhaps a typical Design Escape may boast, (there are 87 in total), yet its character draws in aesthetic aficionados with a unique story centred around the golden age of Portuguese discoveries.

Reviving the historic Rádio Renascença broadcasting building, the name of the hotel is taken from two 19th-century Portuguese explorers who were the first Europeans to cross Central Africa, Roberto Ivens & Hermenegildo Capelo. Inviting Mediterranean colours & exotic patterns inspired by their far-flung travels grace an elegant lobby, long hallways & cosy bedrooms, while sumptuous textures set the scene inside them.

Room Service

Location: Chiado, Lisbon

Price: Suites start at 240€ per night.

Highlights: The bar & restaurant at The Ivens are a hot ticket. Rocco recalls a traditional Italian osteria, while the Crudo bar pays homage to culinary adventure with walls brimming with porcelain, sketches, paintings & illustrations.

Designed by Catalan architect Lázaro Rosa-Violán designed The Iven’s opulent & maximalist public spaces while interior designer Cristina Matos leaned into the site’s history when designing the bedrooms, drawing on the materials & colour palette of the 19th century with a contemporary eye.

Favourite room: All the bedrooms are a delight, but our favourite room can be found in the restaurant downstairs, Rocco, where rattan & marble grace the bar with black-&-white checkerboard tiling underfoot.

Services: Everything you would expect from a luxurious 5* hotel.

The Neighbourhood: The Chiado bairro of Lisbon invites days spent boutique-shopping, gallery-hopping & lingering in literary cafes.

Things to know: The Ivens is one of our only non-independent hotels, so some of the charm is lost to the Marriot Groups’ corporate edge.
