A subtle, modernist take on the vernacular architecture of the Algarve comes to life in a renovated farmhouse by hotel/home hybrid ‘The Adressesses’, tucked amongst the orange groves of the regions Eastern shores near Tavira. With architecture by Atelier Rua & Belgian design house, Studio Stories, on interiors, Casa Um creates a seamless flow that encourages a slower pace of life equal to the quaint & quiet location.
Whitewashed walls & concrete floors are dotted with rattan mats, conjuring a soothing atmosphere inside the house which has space to sleep eight. Four bedrooms have big open bathrooms & floor-to-ceiling windows which open up onto a garden of rosemary, lavender & honey blossom. Where an old farmhouse once stood, a kitchen & living space is reimagined, opening out onto a private patio complete with the original bread oven. The stables have been converted into a dining room with a bespoke marble table perfect for cooler evenings & the fire pit & log burner in the sitting room adding extra cosiness, drawing the nights long into the evening. This is a house that is as sociable as you want it to be, with summer spent moseying around a private pool & lounge-worthy outdoor space.

Location: Moncarapacho, Algarve
Price: From 1600€ per week, with reservations from Saturday - Saturday unless requested otherwise.
Sleeps: The house sleeps eight people in four double bedrooms.
Highlights: Breakfast on the hill next to the house with views of the blue Atlantic on a clear day, to the soundtrack of buzzing honey bees who live in the hives next door.
Our favourite room: While you have the whole house to yourself, the fourth & final room at the end of the corridor bodes large windows overlooking a lavender garden. Open them as you wake to get that outside-in feeling, at one with nature.
Services: The house is self-catered however breakfast, lunch & dinner can be prepared by an in-house chef on request. The Addresses ‘home to hotel’ concept means that Mario, the house concierge is on tap to help you organise your stay & anything you need while you’re there.

The Neighbourhood: Casa Um is surrounded by orange & citrus groves, the scent of which drifts across the property. Nearby is the town of Tavira, once heralded as an important place for trade in Portugal & with my historical significance, there’s also a wonderful market on Saturdays to stock up on weekend produce.

Casa Um is located in the countryside of Moncarapacho, around a thirty-minute drive from Faro. Fly to Faro & rent a little car, taking a road trip while finding some freedom while you’re there.
