Coco Heavey in Madeira
POSTCARDS FROM…
Born in Spain to Irish parents, Coco grew up on the tiny volcanic Portuguese island of Madeira, miles west of the Iberian Peninsula. Her love for the simple style of women who would holiday on the island, & of her style icon Jane Birkin combined with memories of wicker baskets used in the fishing markets to haul the daily catch in from the sea inspired her to found her own small basketry brand Bonjour Coco. Sourced from the small Portuguese fishing village where Birkin first found her own, the baskets have been worn by everyone from Leandra Medine of Man Repeller, to Jeanne Damas & on the Alberta Ferretti catwalk.
Drawn in by stories of her love for swimming in the ocean, reading, taking time to cook, & having good food with a nice glass of wine, we take a trip with Coco Heavey to discover her Madeira.
Postcards from…is a series of love letters to Portugal & a collection of insider guides from our Design Escapes muses; locals & visitors that travel with their eyes open, led always by a quiet & authentic beauty.
Tell us about you Coco, what inspires you?
I live in Lisbon with my boyfriend & dog Boogie. I spend most of my time travelling & working on a project I started a while back with handmade baskets that are made in the South of Portugal. I called it Bonjour Coco as it came from my love of simplicity, of Jane Birkin & beautiful girls from that time. What inspires me…hmmm. I would say being in love, long phone calls with my Father, small intimate moments with my friends, being surrounded by beauty, to be in nature…
Okay, so where are we waking up & how are we spending the morning?
We’re waking up in the beautiful Funchal on Madeira Island. As soon as we wake we’ll go down to the local market to buy some flowers & fruit. It’s such a beautiful market with so much colour & variety. They have about 5 types of passion fruit! The fresh tuna & scabbard fish is also something I love to buy & cook at home, locals style “Filete de espada com banana is delicious” or some “Atum com molho vilão”.
It's lunchtime, where are we going?
I love Madeira in the offseason, so we’ll go for lunch in the winter sun by the pool at Reid’s Palace. It oozes an air of time old style & casual nostalgia. We’ll have a quick dip in the gorgeous Atlantic ocean too, it’s much warmer than the ocean on mainland Portugal.
Okay, what are our afternoon plans?
We’ll go with the boys to Jardim do Mar so we can have a surf session or catch some sun & read a book or we’ll go spend the afternoon at Fajã dos Padres which is a lovely place to sunbathe or go for a swim. Another option would be going for a Levada walk somewhere on the island, it depends how lazy we are feeling!
Where are we going for sunset...?
For sunset we’ll wander to a nice outdoor bar near the old town in Funchal called Barreirinha. It has a lovely infinitive view of the ocean.
How about dinner...talk us through it.
For dinner we’re going to Vila Cipriani, in the summertime it’s really worth getting a table on the terrace outside & having a view looking over the cliff. It’s very romantic. After dinner, we’ll walk down to the old town & have a traditional Poncha (Madeiran rum, it’s strong!) or have a drink at the Ritz Cafe in Funchal.
What are we collecting on our travels?
I love to visit local markets but vintage clothing or linens are my favourite finds. We’ll also bring back some local different foods that we can’t find back home. I also really enjoy Hugo Brazão’s work & love that he comes from Madeira Island, so if we are feeling like splurging maybe we will find some of his pieces too.
What are we reading or listening to on our journey?
It’s a bit of a cliché but I started re-reading Joan Didion’s “The White Album”. I have a habit of starting to read two of three books at the same time because I get over-excited with new books & then one prevails the others. I watched the Netflix documentary on her recently & wanted to go back to the book. So far I’m hooked!
Where is home?
Home is where I feel relaxed & cosy. I’ve had a few homes but currently home is in Lisbon with my boyfriend & my dog Boogie who comes everywhere with us. He is the best thing about coming home after being away - the crazy amount of kisses & snuggles we give each other is crazy! It’s pure joy.
My favourite room in my house is…
I do love hanging out in my bedroom. It’s where I wind down & have my zen moments. My dining room too, we really like hosting dinners at home.
What holiday are we planning next?
A friends small house right on top of Arrifana beach. It’s so dreamy!
