Morgado do Quintao
WEST ALGARVE / HOMES / TRIED & TESTED
This humble vineyard estate in Southern Portugal was founded by the Count of Silves in the late 19th century. Almost 200 years later, his legacy has been placed in the hard-working hands of his descendants, who have since put their heart & soul into the quiet renovation of the property. Here amongst the vineyards of the Algarve’s Morgado do Quintão, are three quaint cottages, renovated & decorated with found objects, family heirlooms & antiques with a contemporary twist sourced by design consultants escolhido.co.
Set amongst the vines, almond groves & fig orchards, each dwelling (which house 2 - 3 bedrooms each) has its own private pool & kitchen so you can rustle up finds from the local market when you’re not having lunch on the sandy beaches nearby or under 2000-year-old olive tree at the vineyard. Served on mismatched white linen & china, make your way through the estates’ harvest served at the farmer’s table before spending a lazy evening watching the sunset over the Monchique mountains in the distance.
Room Service
Location: Silves, Algarve.
Price: From 300€ per night per cottage.
Sleeps: Cottages house 4-8 people in double & bunk bedrooms perfect for little ones.
Highlights: Morgado do Quintao is filled with a nostalgic style & the Main House is filled with objects & artworks by the current owner’s mother who was a sculptor & artist of note, it all feels very homey & personal.
Our favourite room: The Amendoa cottage is our favourite for its setting, away from the main estate & with views towards the Monchique mountains. The Bougainvillea cottage is also a heavenly retreat albeit at the centre of the action, but with a beautiful garden & pool with scalloped edges.
Services: Cottages are all self-catered, the estate’s organic wine is also available in the fridges to help ourselves to, billed at checkout.
Designed by The descendants who currently look after the farm renovated the cottages themselves, with interiors by escolhido.co.

The Neighbourhood: A short drive away is the town of Silves, a place that used to be the capital of the Algarve & filled with noble buildings & a sweet square for coffee. The beaches of the West Algarve are here too, backed by orange cliffs & dotted with caves & coves.
Things to know: The cottages aren’t air-conditioned but their old thick walls keep them cool in the summer. Log burners for winter are in each cottage too for cooler evenings.
