Herdade da Malhadinha Nova
ALENTEJO / HOTEL / WATCHLIST
Just a two-hour drive from either Faro or Lisbon, set upon the rolling hills of Portugal’s newest & lesser-known wine region, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is a stylish family-owned vineyard & farmhouse hotel that expands to 6 modern houses located within sprawling vineyards & cork forest. After check-in with a glass of the family's wine, be driven by Jeep to your private hideaway where your only neighbour is, perhaps, a curious brown cow or a nest of storks.
Blending into their remote surroundings, these dwellings are seriously high-end but with an air of laid-back luxury meaning, you won't want to leave once you're settled in. That is unless you’re walking up to the property’s culinary hub, the on-site restaurant & the fruit of renowned Michelin-starred chef Joachim Koerper & the versatile resident chef, Rodrigo Madeira, (a cook with vast knowledge of traditional Alentejo recipes). If you’re not sampling the oenological & gastronomical splendour at Malhadinha, instead, spend your days learning how to make local pottery or how to perfect your archery, riding bikes & horses around the vines, or relaxing with a spa treatment by your private infinity pool.

Highlights: A picnic amongst the vines is a beautiful way to spend an afternoon before climbing on one of the estate’s award-wining horses for a ride shaded only by sporadic cork trees under orange Alentejo skies.
Our favourite room: While the new modern rooms are breathtaking, a room in the old farmhouse, where Malhadinha Nova began is also a treat & feels like a home away from home. The Suites at Casa das Pedras & exclusive-use Casa da Ribeira & Casa das Artes each have their own private pools.
Services: Breakfast & lunch are served daily while the spa, gardens, library, winery & list of country activities will keep you connected. Casa da Ribeira & Casa das Artes & Ofícios each have fully equipped kitchens.
The Neighbourhood: The Herdade is located at the low part of the Alentejo wine country, so jump in the car & head North to sample others.
Things to know: The hotel has recently expanded & is adjusting its team, patience is sometimes required. If you want to get your hands dirty, ask about grape picking & grape-trampling during the August harvest just beware of summer temperatures that, in this part of the country can reach forty-degrees centigrade.
