Okulus Madeira
MADEIRA / HOME / WATCHLIST
Lying in the North Atlantic off the coast of Africa, the subtropical climate of Madeira is where volcanic peaks, lush forests & exotic plants rise from the deep blue Atlantic. It is here in the quaint old town of the island’s capital, Funchal, that Cristina Leitão Abreu created Funchal Cottages, a collection of characterful properties with captivating widescreen views.
Okulus Madeira is the newest of her cool cliffside escapes. A spacious, four-bedroom enclave built into the mountainside & suspended over the ocean, the property boasts a seafront rooftop terrace, infinity pool & hanging garden complete with winding stairs that lead straight down to a private pebble beach. Once overrun with cacti inside & out, bristling layers metres high, today, hand-painted Chinoiserie panels & bright colours contrast with raw concrete walls, hinting at the humble industrial origins of the building.
Inside, design classics such as Platner chairs & vintage Murano lights have been added as final touches, paired with reclaimed furniture given new life by local artisans; salvaged grand oak doors, rattan & reed wove pendants & straw headboards are inspired by the arabesques of the island’s vintage gazebos. Once you’re finished gushing over the house, step out into the slightly surreal air of Madeira for a few days hiking the stunning coastline, swimming in mountain waterfalls, exploring farmers markets & visiting artists studios, all in the hands of Okulus, a house at the edge of the world.
