It's unusual to find a contemporary dwelling in this neck of the woods, where knobbly old farms & thick-walled cottages dominate the landscape: but that is exactly what the owners had in mind when they built A Casa de Estremoz. The house is located just outside of its namesake town, Estremoz, an ancient labyrinth of streets that play host to a weekly Saturday market filled with antiques & trinkets alongside abundant produce from the surrounding region’s farmers.
Originally built in 1939 the home stayed in the family for three generations before it was recently given a new lease of life with architect João Cassiano Santos. With interiors that strike a unique balance between old-world farmhouse & modern no-frills abode, bedrooms are complete with king-size double beds & marble showers surrounded by handmade tiles. Step outside for an alfresco shower dappled by sunshine while soaking in the greenery around you, or roam through fragrant lavender that lines the cobbled paths on your way down for a dip in the swimming pool.
Room Service
Location: Estremoz, Alentejo.
Price: In the high season from 500€ per night with a seven-night minimum stay. In the low season 400€ per night with a five-night minimum stay.
Sleeps: Six people in three ensuite bedrooms & a fourth mezzanine room with a queen-size bed & two single beds, ideal for little ones.
Highlights: Alfresco showers at sunrise or sunset overlooking the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Our favourite room: You have them all to yourselves, but the master is the most special.
Services: Breakfast and daily cleaning can be arranged, on request, at an additional price.

The Neighbourhood: Make sure you time your stay for the weekend market & have lunch in town while you’re there, we love Mercearia Gadanha. Estremoz is also surrounded by some of the countries most special vineyards, try Herdade do Freixo if architecture is your thing.
Things to know: This is a sleepy place so don’t expect too much buzz.

A Casa da Estremoz is located just outside of the town of Estremoz in the Alentejo countryside, around an hour and a half drive from Lisbon. Fly to Lisbon & rent a car for a little road trip & some freedom during your stay.
