Casa Calma Comporta

COMPORTA / HOME / TRIED & TESTED

A new addition to the collection of architectural homes in this stylish enclave of Portugal that encourages barefoot living, Casa Calma Comporta is a masterclass in modern minimalism & purist philosophies. Designed by the renowned architect João Pedro Falcão de Campos, the house springs from a sandy hill set between a green flood plain & a white dune that sprawls out to the Atlantic just five minutes walk away. With views out onto fields filled with sunflowers & cabbages which sprout from local farms, this is a place that pays homage to traditional Alentejo houses with white walls, gable roofs & Estremoz marble stone.

Strong lines lead the way, creating a distinct yet harmonising contrast to the natural environment that surrounds it including the rustling reeds & sculptural flowers that grow from sandy soil, connecting to the heated 12-meter-long pool shaded by pine trees. Inside, the white walls & concrete floors create a neutral palette, while earthy textures from wood & painterly textiles soften what is already a calming atmosphere. Three spacious suites are dotted around the house, including a twin room with a mezzanine perfect for little ones. The master bedroom quietly boasts a sleek white bathtub overlooking spectacular sunsets to sink into with a book at the end of a long day by the sea or shopping in the local village.

At the centre of the house, a large open-plan living & dining room lined with contemporary Portuguese sculptures & ceramics calls for social families & friends to gather, cooking on the vast kitchen island while dipping into Casa Calma’s curated honesty bar before dinner on the deck underneath the vine-clad pergola.

The Neighbourhood: Moments away is Sublime Comporta Beach Club, & a short drive away is the village of Carvalhal, a sleepy local town. Comporta is around a 20 minute, easy drive away.

Need to Know: Comporta is renowned for mosquitos so make sure to steer clear of sitting outside at sunset. There is also some construction happening around the property (Comporta is still respectfully developing & at a rapid rate) but we didn’t notice too much noise while we were there. It’s planned to finish by September 2022. Any works in the area are required to pause during the summer months of July & August also.
