Casa C’alma

LISBON / GUESTHOUSE / TRIED & TESTED

A stay at Casa C’alma is like returning to visit a (very stylish) friend who lives on one of the prettiest squares in Europe’s coolest city, Lisbon. A five-bedroom apartment turned guesthouse, this cosy space is a casual interpretation of thoughtful hospitality, one that attracts young, creative & like-minded travellers from far & wide.

A 1970’s inspired corridor leads to the quiet private bedrooms complete with original wooden floors enveloped by clean lines & decorated with Japanese paper lamps, mid-century furniture & supported by simple bathrooms. Make sure you reserve a room with a view out onto the Praça so on waking up, you can watch below as locals stroll through with their morning coffee from Marquise, the neighbourhood’s best bakery.

The living room is an inviting & relaxing place to cosy in with a glass of wine before dinner (perhaps picked up from low intervention wine bar, Black Sheep, downstairs) & a light but tasty, traditional Portuguese breakfast is served here in the mornings including creamy yogurt & flakey pastel de nata. This is a spot you’ll return to again & again as a base to explore a softer side to the city.

Room Service

Location: Praça das Flores, Lisbon.

Price: Suites start from 120€ per night.

Highlights: The location is a real gem as the pretty square draws a lovely creative crowd from all around. The fact that the guesthouse is independently owned & each piece of furniture has been handpicked also makes it feel characterful & eclectic.

Our favourite room: The garden suites for the best views.

Services: Breakfast is served each morning in the living room & there’s an onsite concierge during the day who can give insightful & off-the-beaten-track tips for the area. We were even given access to a google map with the owner’s favourite spots in the city.

The Neighbourhood: Praça das Flores is where cool creatives live, eat work & relax so settle in & pick up our Lisbon Design Directory to seek out the hotspots. We love Black Sheep for wine & Magnolia Cafe or Senhor Uva for a delicious casual dinner. Marquise across the square has some of the best pastries in Lisbon. Don’t miss it.

Things to know: As Casa C’alma is essentially a large apartment turned guesthouse, you can sometimes hear other guests when they return or are walking around the space - but everyone is very respectful and the place draws a nice crowd to be around.

Stay here if: You enjoy smaller, independent spaces and simple but stylish design. It’s best suited to couples or families with grown-up children.

Casa C’alma is a member of the Design Escapes Club, tried & tested personally by us.
