A quiet retreat, just an hour south of Lisbon, Cabanas No Rio is embraced by tranquillity & solitude only a few minutes drive from the fashionably sizzling, yet soul-filled Comporta village. Part four of the Silent Living collective, this is a serious writers’ retreat or a honeymoon-worthy hideaway for two that consists of just two small recovered fisherman’s huts, reimagined by renowned Portuguese architect Aires Mateus.
One cabin contains a muslin shrouded bed & en-suite bathroom that looks out onto the natural reserve, ancient winding waterways still used today by local oyster pickers. The other cabin is home to a living area that sits back in nature & both are fashioned from recycled timber, set along the banks of the magnificent & soothing Sado River. Take breakfast with the elements on the jetty & watch flamingos, storks & sometimes, dolphins in the distance, or soak in the sunset as it sets over the mountains beyond.

The Neighbourhood: Built by fishermen in the 1960s, the Palafito da Carrasqueira Wharf is a walk away while the thrumming village of Comporta is nearby.
Things to know: While the architectural prowess of the Cabanas is alluring, a stay at Cabanas No Rio can feel quite basic in its proximity to nature. Be aware, too, of mosquitos especially in the summer at sundown & of course that Comporta village is rather seasonal so can feel quiet in the winter months.

The Map
Cabanas no Rio is located just outside of the village of Comporta, about an hour and half drive from Lisbon. We’d recommend renting a vintage jeep to fit in with the locals & to ensure you have maximum freedom to explore while you’re there.
